After a great reaction from fans by Harley Quinn’s role in Batman: The Animated Series, creators Paul Dini and Bruce Timm explored the character’s origin in their graphic novel Mad Love in 1994. Staying in continuity of the animated series, the comic book follows Harleen Quinzel as a psychiatrist at a mental hospital called Arkham Asylum where she becomes obsessed with one of its famous criminal patient the Joker who becomes aware of her mad crush on him and seduces her as his lover, manipulating her into helping in his escape. Bearing in mind George Clooney was under the cowl the last time a cinema audience saw the Caped Crusader in live-action, Christopher Nolan couldn’t have made a bolder statement with Batman Begins in 2005. After recasting Bruce Wayne’s origin in a darker, more realistic light and setting up the imminent arrival of Joker, Christian Bale’s superhero was primed to soar even higher in 2008’s The Dark Knight, but few were prepared for the revolutionary cinematic sequel Nolan ultimately delivered.
But every moment is pervaded and invaded by the unsettling presence of Ledger’s Joker, even though he spends long stretches of time off-screen. 9/11 allegory about how terror (and, make no mistake, Heath Ledger’s Joker is a terrorist) breaks down those reassuring moral categories. In short, Chris Nolan does more nuanced thinking about the war on terror than we’ve seen from the Bush administration in seven years. A colleague with whom I saw the movie felt that Nolan’s use of 9/11 references was exploitive, that he was tapping into our deep cultural anxiety about terror just to spice up his blockbuster. Jim Gordon, the movie seems to arrive at much the same conclusion about Batman as Americans have about Bush: Thanks to this guy, we’re well and thoroughly screwed. Well as usual I like to be a guy’s costume but make it my girl version so I decided on a girl Joker costume, besides the Joker is creepy looking and most girl just want to be girly costumes. Many dressed as anime characters from series such as the Japanese animated series Love Live in vibrant coloured wigs and costumes.
And in Tennessee, a drive-in theater banned moviegoers from wearing costumes to a screening of the R-rated “Joker,” which scored an October box-office record with $13.3 million in earnings. She’d first had her lips enhanced when she was 17 – something that would now be illegal, as offering cosmetic jabs to under-18s was banned in October – and in a YouTube video that’s been viewed more than two million times claimed she did not miss her ‘lumpy, bumpy horrible filler’. The Dark Knight was co-scripted by Nolan and his brother Jonathan (a fiction writer who also wrote two earlier Nolan films, joker purple suit Memento and The Prestige). Obviously, the Joker suit and the rest of the outfit and makeup played an important role in the portrayal of the dark and twisted character acted by Phoenix. Joaquin Phoenix is in his full costume in a new set video from Joker. From a strategic point of view, the scenario seems perfectly simple: one boat’s full of criminals, the other full of ordinary civilians.
The Dark Knight elevates the entire superhero sub-genre, and establishes Nolan as one of cinema’s modern greats. As The Dark Knight begins, Gotham’s streets have been so thoroughly cleansed of crime, thanks not only to Batman but the crusading District Attorney Harvey Dent (a wickedly well-cast Aaron Eckhart), that the mob no longer knows how to move its money around. Uses her death to recruit Harvey Dent as an ally. Due to a few tragic and traumatic forces triggered by the Joker, Dent was driven to madness, and Two-Face was born. Their battle culminates in an abandoned high-rise construction site, with Joker holding a group of civilians hostage and orchestrating a “social experiment” with two ferries, while Harvey Dent holds Commission Gordon’s family at gunpoint. There are many more strands twisting in and out of the braid, including the love triangle among Harvey Dent, Batman’s alter ego Bruce Wayne, and assistant DA Rachel Dawes (Maggie Gyllenhaal, taking over the role from a far less able Katie Holmes); and the politically charged scenes in which Wayne debates the limits of vigilante justice with his right-hand man Lucius Fox (Morgan Freeman). Meanwhile, losing Rachel makes Bruce Wayne even more determined to prove his moral path is just.
